Happy New Year Batches
Hope you all get your drank on or whatever it is that floats your boat. This year was kinda painful for a lot of reasons. We lost a lot of good people this year so hopefully that trend dose not continue into 2010.
With all the hype of new years all i want to do is be at some house party surrounded by my peeps. I love all you guys. Lets make 2010 that year.

Exhibit C
This is for all the Just Blaze and Jay Electronica fans out there. Fuck the Hype Jay is the freshest thing i've heard in rap in ages. Just kills the beat. Now i want to hear some Jay over some Rich Harrison beats.
And this is just incase you don't know what im talking about...

And Now For Something Completely Different
Sometimes you just want to rock out. New York 1977: The Dictators covering the Stooge's classic Search and Destroy "Yes the reason that Henery Rollins has that tattooed on his back). I first heard these guys on Wanye DZ's The Alternative Music show on 2SER FM in the late 90's. Wanye would play all kinds of stuff from garage rock to pychobilly/rockobilly to b grade movie soundtracks. His show is still going today tune in and be educated.

Sucker For A Pretty Face
That cheeky Manchester lad Trus' Me is back with his second album entitled In The Red. It features guest spots from Dam Funk and Amp Fiddler so that should give you an idea of which direction Mr Trus is heading in. Less experimentation than the last one and more stripped back sexy electro funk goodness that would work well in the club.

Nite Jewel
Nite Jewel is exactly the kind of lo fi, deep, lush tape delayed kind of electronic music that i love listening to lounging around after a hard day doing what exactly it is that i do all day. Having released some music out the label Human Ear and Italians Do It Better. Nite Jewel was rediscovered so to speak by Dam Funk finding their out of print record Good Evening and bringing it to the attention of Stonesthrow Records who are distributing their 7" Weak For You courtesy of 1984 records.

Shake This
Im not gonna lie hip hop in general these days bores the fusk out of me. But just as im about to write it off along comes something that makes me remember why i loved this ish. The reason i used to stay up late at night taping radio shows. The reason that after payday i'd run to the record stores and be broke until next payday. The reason why i used to sleep, eat and shit this music.

Renee Geyer
I haven't been buying much music lately. Instead i've just been digging through my collection and enjoying some of the records that i have. One that i pulled out the other day which deserves far more play than it gets is Moving Along by Renee Geyer. It came out in 1977 and Be There In The Morning is probably my favourite cut off it although there are many golden moments. Its not a hard record to find so pick it up next time you see it. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Deebeephunky
This track is a nice little slice of dubbed out phunky minimal tech. Best heard on a huge system it builds up for ages. Out on Muller Records by the artist Beroshima. I think picked this up at Reachin Records when it was still around. I have fond memories of dancing around to this track dropped by James Bond at a Jungle Punks NYE party back in 99. Big shouts to the Dark Energy guys.

Moonrock
From 98 out on Creative Vibes Moonrock was the project of two Sydney producers Katalyst and Illpickl (RIP). Mostly instrumental, only two tracks featured vocals it was an atmospheric, down tempo beats affair with cuts being provided by Leroy Brown. At a time when australian production wasn't widely know outside its own shores or even within them this was a world class effort. Eventually one their tracks Ill Street Blues was picked up by Jose Padilla for the Cafe Del Mar compilation series. Here's one of the vocal tracks off the album. Enjoy

RIP Roc Raida
The X-Ecutioners did so much for the art of turntablism. They really were so far ahead of their game in 97 when their first album X-Pressions dropped. So technical yet they were one of the few crews that managed to retain an element of funk and creativity to what they were doing. With their skills and knowledge they brought the whole scene up to their level and pushed the boundaries of what people though you could do with two turntables and a bunch of records.
RIP Roc Raida one of the illest DJs to ever get down.

PPP
It suddenly occurred to me that i had been remiss in mentioning how PPP's album Abundance came out earlier this year. I was lucky enough to catch them at the Days Like This Festival here in Sydney ( Promoters if your reading this please do it again). Waajeed and Saadiq totally killed it. I had high expectations for this album after how amazing their first one was. After several listens and the fact that its still in high rotation on my stereo. I have to say that they came correct. I like how they update and change their sound every record its very refreshing. Cop this on vinyl to really hear the grooves.

Low Profile
Okay im going to blow my hip hop credentials here and say how the first time i'd heard of Dj Aladdin was on the Scratchcon 2000 video where he's so drunk when he gets on stage he blows his routine and eventually has to be escorted off stage by two big security guys. But not before he makes it clear to everyone about how he feels about a certain gang from LA.
Anyway way before that DJ Alladin and WC (of mad circle fame) were in a group called Low Profile that put out an album around 1989 called Were' In This Together. Fast forward a few years to when i was buying a few records off DJ MLYK( Record collector, DJ and well rounded nice guy) he slipped this one in as a freebie. Suffice to say i was blown away by the production, Rhymes and Dj Aladdin's cuts. This is West Coast rap at its finest check it out and see why Aladdin was such a role model to Q-Bert and the Pickles.

C-90: Side B
C-90: Side B is an exhibition by Australian artist and curator Mark Drew, featuring large scale hand painted illustrations of cassette tape spines. The first part of C-90 took place in Sydney late in 2008, with a different version touring to Melbourne, with both shows selling out. The exhibition for 72 Erskine is a continuation of the body of work, and features all new artwork. The inspiration for the show comes from the much loved collections of cassettes that most people had as teenagers in the 1980s & 90s. "In a time of MP3 data and binary information, the imagery C-90 deals with is quite emotive, recalling the graphic side of personal music collections". Drew has exhibited frequently around Australia and has been behind the scenes of many local art shows, as co-owner of China Heights gallery. This will be his last local solo exhibition before taking up residency in Japan. Opening function: Wednesday September 2nd, 6-8pm Show open from Monday August 31st - Saturday September 5th Gallery hours: Mon - Fri: 11-6pm Sat - 11-3pm 72 Erskine Street Sydney NSW 2000 tel & fax: 02-9299 9779 i

Okay back when i smoked weed and actually gave a shit about turntable-ism ( is that even a word anymore ?) I would grab all the turntable tv and dmc tapes (yes actually vhs tapes) i could. Now days when cats like A-track and Craze and klever are playing fidget house and b-more jams no one hardly remembers who actually won the dmc's in 99. One of the heats i do remember is DJ P's. While not the most technical proficient he's defiently enjoying himself.

All that aside the guys from Truth and Soul Records and Lee Fields have put together a truly amazing release which hasn't left my turntable in weeks. Zeb Hear My Cry Remix
I've been going through my collection over the last few days ripping a bunch of 12"s that i have decided that i can live with only having digital copies of. I simply need the money and room that offloading a few crates will give me. And of course over time your taste changes and i think its good to spring clean your collection every now and then.
While sorting through i found this Mawglee 12" on bastard jazz from 2005. I was buying heaps of breaks records around then. However the last track on the EP is a remix by Wonder-wheel's Zeb and is nice dub reworking of one of the original tracks entitled Sofa. I've been on a massive dub tip lately and its nice to hear a modern version of a track. Check it out.

MOS DEF PT2
Okay i wrote a review for mos def's new album the Ecstatic but apparently along the way i infringed on some copyright so bogspot pulled the entire post and not just the offending link. So here's the quick rundown of the album in point form.
*There is never going to be another Black Star album so get over it.
*Mos Def is back on point with his BK swagger.
*Better Than the disappointing True Magic and the New Danger
*Production by Oh No, Madlib, Dilla, Chad Hugo, Perseverance and Mr Flash
*Mos is one the few people taking hip hop forward in 09
*Slick Rick is on this album. Slick Rick people what more do i need to say !
*Learn to save drafts on hard disk before publishing.
*Mos is good
*Infringing copyright is bad

Hardcore Tuesday Pt 2
Okay time for some more punk/hardcore related posts
First up is All You Can Eat or AYCE for short. I think i first heard these guys because they did a split coloured 12" with sydney band Lawnsmell. After that i went and picked up their album En Ouef. These guys are so cool. So much fun they just didn't really take shit that seriously. They toured a few times but i was too young to get into the gigs. At a backyard gig in Melburn with One Inch Punch, Devon the singer climbed up on the roof of the shed and fell through. He was always doing crazy shit live. Try and find Barcode The World on VHS for some footage of them playing live in the now defunct Phantom Records.
FYP were one of those bands that hid some great talent through some we don't give a shit playing. Harsh as they were they also had strange moments of harmony. I was always looking for new bands and FYP were recommend by some friends of mine and i was hooked from the get go. Ah the sound of youth ha ha
Wow Propagandhi, Where to start with this one. I picked up their first cd on fatwreckchords (big props to fat mike for puttting some like this out) at the local music sho, Leading Edge music or Eagles or what ever the fuck it was called back then. I didn't know shit about the group but the cover and the band name intrigued me. Also the shitty mug shot photos of the band members gave me a fair idea of what kind of music they played. What i didn't realise was the politics of the band. Total anarchist, vegetarian, pro feminist, gay friendly and anti fascist. I could write a novel on how this album changed my life and perspective on things but thats a whole another post. Suffice to say it blew my fifteen year old mind.
Gonna change it up a little with some classic shit from Operation Ivy. Solid band outta Berkeley in Cali. They fused ska and punk really well. They also had the cool logo of some mod guy with a mohawk. Their self titled album on lookout records ( yes the home of green day) was rinsed out back in the day and was the soundtrack for many a drinking and skanking session. Half of the band went on to form Rancid.
Spazz was one of the founders of the movement called power violence. They were hardcore before it was cool.
They did a split cd with sydney punk kings Subversion. They are heavy as fuck. They also used to use funny ass kung fu samples in their music. Enjoy. Did i mention they are heavy as fuck ?

Hardcore Tuesday
Okay im either reliving my teenage years or im feeling a little rowdy either way here's some classics that you need in your life.
I had this on tape. Still do some where. Great song i vaguely remember trading something for this. Gotta love albums that have seventeen songs and clock in around the 30 min mark.
Minor Threat were so ill. Its a shame so many idiots latched onto their philosophy and turned some great ideals into a stupid elitist scene. I had some people in my life back then that i always thought about when i played this song.
I flipped out when i first heard MDC. Their music and politics were on some take no prisoners shit. Total hardcore. I mean their name alone throws down the gauntlet Millions Of Dead Cops. They used to change it up for each album. Some where along the way my Shades of Brown album went missing. Any one got it ?
I always liked the 80's US hardcore bands better than the 70's UK punk scene. The US just didn't fuck around where the UK seemed more about fashion. Black Flag was the leader of the pack for me. A no bullshit let's go approach to music and attitude.
This guy i went to Tafe with back in the day lent me a cd of this. It was a double album Wild In The Streets backed with Group sex. Funnily enough it all fitted on a single disk. Love that Cali Punk sound. Thanks Ben.
Ben had a brother Andrew. One night after having watched some bands at The Phoenician Club (fuck Bob Carr for closing it down) and heading back northside on the train we were going through a bunch of records that he'd bought at the show. One of them was Bouncing Soul's The Good The Bad The Arglye. Being the inquisitive guy i am i asked him what it sounded like. So he lent it to me. I took it home and was blown away. It became my favorite album for years to come.
I could keep going on and on but i think i'll save it for next tuesday. So I'll leave you with some screeching weasel without which of course there would be no such bands as blink 182 and fall out boy who all suck anyway ha ha

MARTYN
When people write album reviews they always seem to throw around a bunch of cliches such as "genre defying" and "cutting edge". Once in a while there is an album that these cliches actually apply to.
I don't need cliches to describe Martyn's Great Lengths album. One word will do and that word is "Wow".
Just plain wow. Im really feeling the direction Dubstep producers such as Martyn, Synkro, Appleblim and 2562 are taking the genre. Martyn takes his extensive experience in producing techno and Drum and Bass. Fuses it with half time drum patterns, some amazing echo, reverb, filtered and delayed effected synths and creates a unique electronic masterpiece with dancefloor sensibilities. A journey touching down in Detroit, Holland and London. Truly inspiring stuff. Check out Vancouver for an example of this space age funk.
Out now on his own label 3024.

Benny Johnson Please Come Back
Winter seems to have come early this year. Im not sure wether its the drop in the temperature or the dramatic reduction of sunlit hours in the day but its put me into a reflective mood. Could be the fact that im turning 30 and i need some grown folk music. But whatever the reason im glad that the sweet sounds of Benny Johnson are here. Released in 1973 on NYC's Today records. Visions Of Paradise is a slice of pure soul goodness.

Money Mark
Its amazing what you can find under your bed. Clothes, dvds, cds and a whole bunch of other stuff that i thought i had lost. Amongst the many things i rediscovered was this Money Mark album on Mowax from 1995. Mark's played keys with everyone from the Beastie Boys, to Beck and even Danger Mouse and MF Doom.
Its a trip into the mind of money mark. Quirky and eccentric in places. Funky in others but always enjoyable.

So being a little late discovering hip hop only in the waning years of the mid 90s ( I actually had some Hammer, Vanilla and Young MC tapes but that dosn’t count). I was only a couple of years late in the explosion of a new style of break beat music that was to become known as Drum and Bass.
Drum and Bass a genre born through the union of hardcore raves dark sounds and the frantic drum break of the Winston Brothers Amen break(Much like Baltimore is based on the Sing Sing and It Takes Two breaks). This was music where engineering and production excelled. Drums were chopped, compressed, gated and equalised into the sound of the future. Admittedly a slightly dark version of the future but uplifting as well.
Now back then as many of my peers are at pains to explain. There was no Internet. MP3s and social networking sites did not exist. There were only two ways for cutting edge dance music to be distributed to the general public: Community radio and the clubs. Being young and broke the former became the lifeblood for this music hungry youth. 2SER FM was at the forefront with its many genre specific DJ orientated dance shows. Many late night hours were spent with my finger hovering over the pause and record buttons of my tape deck. Producing countless mixtapes that would fill many shoeboxes. One such show, which aired on Monday nites, was Montage. Hosted by the one like DJ Vaughn. Montage played the latest cutting edge tunes from Drum and Bass’s finest. Artists like Dillinjah, Lemon D, Goldie, Doc Scott E Rush and Optical, Roni Size, Adam F and many more had me addicted to this new futuristic sound. Not working at the time I could only collect songs by recording onto my trusty tape deck. I all but wore out my parents and many sets of my own. I prided myself on my knowledge and artists and labels. Happy with every bit of knowledge I gleamed. I became both a connoisseur and critic.
I wasn’t the only person addicted though and there were a number of nights, parties and Djs you could go out to hear the sounds of the Jungle. Jungle Massive Australia. Represented by The Cleaner and Frenzie amongst others. Dave Edwards’s Bass Code parties. 4th and West crew. Matt and Kayla. DJ Mechwarrior who always used to offer a nice change of pace at the Jungle Punk techno parties. DJ V-Tek who eventually took over Montage when Vaughn moved on.
Eventually around 2000 the whole tech step sound, which I had embraced along with jump up, and a myriad of other sub styles. Drew the scene to the same ugly state that was befalling techno. A harder, faster more minimal style, devoid of innovation funk and soul. The genre that was born of innovation became stale and I grew disinterested. Many of my favourite mix tapes were over dubbed (an unfortunate economic necessity) by different music.
Ten years later. New technology has allowed me to go back and revisit many of the artists and tracks that I loved so much. Among many that I had missed as well. Its nice to find that music still stands the test of time and sounds as cutting edge now as it did back then.

Nutcase and Pappachubba Flex
I've been on this bass driven instrumental tip lately. Im really diggin the sparse bass driven nature of heaps of dubstep which owes just a little of its stylistic approach to the musical forms of drum and bass and jungle. This quest for bass had me diggin through my old cds, One of the titles i found was Nutcase and Pappachubba's Flex. This was an Australian duo one half being Paul Mac from Booboo and Mace and Itch-E and Scratch-E fame. The latter being famous for winning an ARIA in 95 and thanking the ectasy dealers of australia. I remember hearing flex being rinsed on 2SER's Montage show when it came out in 97. Its a solid excursion into sub bass driven melodys, dark synths and uplifting vocals and of course the amen break being chopped up and processed through a thousand different effects. I couldn't find an image online but interestingly enough the cd is availble through several european music stores and seems to go for around $50 Aus dollars. Not bad considering most australians have probably never heard of the group.

Harmonic 313 When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence
Okay i won't lie Im a huge fan of all things Detroit. From Motown to Underground Resistance to Slum Village and Obie Trice. So When i heard a few years back that Mark Pritchard the man responsible for Harmonic 33 was going to do a Detroit inspired hip hop instrumental album i was very excited. This is around the time Danny Breaks had dropped some interesting 12"s in a similar vein and i had just discovered Dabyre's work.
When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence combines the sounds of Detroit Techno ( albeit slowed down a little) and mixes them up with Hip Hop and Dubstep drum patterns. Its mainly an instrumental affair but Phat Kat and Elzhi pop up on track and the man with the soulful voice Steve Spacek sings on another. The only thing bad about this album is it leaves me wanting another full length album from Spacek with Pritchard handling production. Out now on Warp Records.

ESG UFO
Foundation : A underlying basis or principle for something. Figurative A body or ground on which other parts rest, or are overlaid.
That's what ESG's track UFO was for hip hop. Sampled thousands of times i still get shivers when i hear the beginning with its siren like guitars. When the drums kick in you know you are listening to a group from the the South Bronx. Released as a self titled 12" in 1981 on 99 Records the same label that gave us Liquid Liquid. This is classic and no self respecting record collection should be with out it.

Delta Fold 'Em
Damn seems March is the month for Hip hop. Hot on the heels of a new single from Raph we also get a little taste of what Delta has been working on. Both these guys are in my top five list of emcees in the country and with the release of Low budgets sophomore release Laser Disc, 09 is shaping up to be a hell of a year.
Make 'Em fold is the bside to his new single entitled The Lines. Mark B produced the track which is a return to form for the duo. Delta spitting hard off raw drums, with dirty funk guitar and organ riffs filling in the gaps.
Aside from being one of the best emcees Delta is also one of the nicest guys you could meet. So make sure you cop this single. Watch for it in stores March 21st. Props to Shogun and NuffSaid Records.
